You can spend ₱5,000 on serums and creams. But if you are not wearing SPF every single morning, you are fighting a losing battle against UV damage, hyperpigmentation, and premature aging. Here is the truth about sunscreen that most brands do not want to say out loud.

Why sunscreen is not optional

Every dermatologist, aesthetician, and skincare scientist agrees on one thing sunscreen is the single most effective anti-aging and brightening product you can use. Not a serum. Not a retinol. Not a vitamin C. Sunscreen.

Here is why. UV radiation is the leading cause of premature skin aging, hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and skin cancer. Every minute your skin is exposed to UV rays without protection, free radicals are being generated that damage your DNA, break down collagen, and trigger excess melanin production. The dark spots you are trying to fade with brightening serums are being actively re-darkened every time you step outside without SPF.

Studies show that daily sunscreen use alone without any other skincare can visibly improve skin tone, reduce dark spots, and slow the appearance of aging within 12 weeks. Sunscreen is not supporting your skincare routine. It is the foundation that makes everything else work.

The myths that stop Filipinos from wearing SPF

❌ Myth
I have dark skin so I do not need sunscreen.
This is one of the most dangerous misconceptions in skincare. While melanin provides some natural UV protection, it is nowhere near enough to prevent sun damage. Filipino and other melanin-rich skin tones are actually more prone to hyperpigmentation from sun exposure our melanocytes are more reactive and produce excess pigment more aggressively in response to UV damage.
❌ Myth
I stay indoors all day so I do not need it.
UVA rays the ones responsible for aging and hyperpigmentation penetrate glass. If you sit near a window, work by natural light, or drive during the day, you are receiving UVA exposure. UVA also does not vary much by season or time of day, which means low-light mornings and cloudy days still require protection.
❌ Myth
Sunscreen breaks me out so I skip it.
This was true of old, heavy chemical sunscreens. Modern mineral and gel-based sunscreens especially those formulated for oily and acne-prone skin are lightweight, non-comedogenic, and will not clog pores. The Sarelle Hue Sunscreen Gel SPF 50 PA+++ is a gel formula specifically designed for Filipino skin it absorbs completely, leaves no white cast, and will not cause breakouts.
❌ Myth
My foundation already has SPF so I am covered.
SPF in makeup provides incomplete protection for two reasons. First, you do not apply enough makeup to reach the protective SPF level on the label. Second, makeup SPF degrades faster and is not evenly distributed. Always apply a dedicated SPF underneath your makeup use your foundation SPF as a bonus layer, not your primary protection.

Understanding SPF and PA ratings

The numbers and letters on a sunscreen label tell you exactly how protected you are. Understanding them helps you make the right choice for Filipino skin.

What does the SPF number mean?

SPF 30
Basic protection
Blocks ~97% of UVB rays. Suitable for limited outdoor exposure.
SPF 50
High protection
Blocks ~98% of UVB rays. Recommended daily for Filipino skin.
SPF 50+
Very high protection
Blocks ~99% of UVB rays. For extended outdoor or beach use.

SPF measures protection against UVB rays the ones that cause sunburn. But UVA rays are responsible for aging, hyperpigmentation, and deep skin damage. This is where the PA rating comes in.

What does PA+++ mean?

PA+
Some UVA protection. Not enough for daily Filipino skin needs.
PA++
Moderate UVA protection. Acceptable for mostly indoor days.
PA+++
High UVA protection. The standard for daily use in tropical climates.
PA++++
Highest UVA protection. For extended outdoor activity and beach use.

For Filipino skin with our year-round tropical sun, high UV index, and melanin-rich skin that is prone to hyperpigmentation SPF 50 PA+++ is the minimum standard for daily use. Not SPF 30. Not PA++. SPF 50 PA+++.

How to apply sunscreen correctly

Most people apply far less sunscreen than they need for the SPF on the label to actually work. The clinical test for SPF ratings uses 2mg of product per square centimeter of skin. For your face, that translates to approximately a full teaspoon far more than most people apply.

1
Apply after your skincare routine serum first, then moisturizer if needed, then SPF last.
SPF should always be the final skincare step before makeup.
2
Use enough. A nickel-sized amount for your face and neck as a minimum.
When in doubt use more. You cannot over-apply sunscreen.
3
Apply 15 minutes before sun exposure so it can fully bond to the skin.
Especially important for chemical sunscreens. Mineral sunscreens work immediately.
4
Reapply every 2 hours if you are outdoors, swimming, or sweating.
SPF degrades with UV exposure and sweat. One morning application is not enough for a full outdoor day.
5
Do not forget your neck, ears, and the back of your hands.
These areas age visibly and are almost always missed in a sunscreen application.

Why we formulated a gel sunscreen for Filipino skin

Most sunscreens feel heavy, leave a white cast, or pill underneath makeup. In a humid tropical climate, a greasy sunscreen is a real barrier to daily use and if a product is uncomfortable to wear, people stop wearing it.

The Sarelle Hue Sunscreen Gel SPF 50 PA+++ was specifically formulated for Filipino skin. The gel texture absorbs completely without residue. There is no white cast it works across all skin tones. It is non-comedogenic, so it will not trigger breakouts. And it is enriched with skin-brightening actives Ceramide, Zinc Oxide, L-Glutathione, and Kojic Acid so it actively works to brighten your skin while protecting it.

Sunscreen that you will actually wear every day is worth infinitely more than a premium sunscreen sitting unused in a drawer. That is the standard we built to.
